The Margarita

According to one story, the margarita—that classic cocktail of tequila, lime juice, and Cointreau or Triple Sec—was invented by a Texan named Margarita Sames, who mixed it up for houseguests at her villa in Acapulco in the late 1940s. Another version credits it to the Caliente Race Track in Tijuana. Still another traces it to the now-defunct Tail o’ the Cock restaurant in Los Angeles, where it was supposedly named after some long-forgotten starlet. Don’t try to spread these tales around El Paso or Juárez, however, where local cocktail connoisseurs know for certain that the drink was first concocted in the latter city, at the Kentucky Club. One night in the ’40s, it seems, a bullfighter was pounding back shots of straight tequila while his date—whose name was guess what—expressed a longing for something a bit more ladylike. The bartender improvised an icy drink of equal parts tequila, lime juice, and Controy (a cheap Mexican imitation of Cointreau)—and named it after the fetching Margarita. The drink became a local tradition. In the old days, movie stars used to flock to Juárez for quickie divorces. One of these was Marilyn Monroe, who flew in to detach herself from Arthur Miller in 1961. When the deed was done, they say, she dropped by the Kentucky Club to celebrate by buying a round of margaritas for the house.
